Artist's Comments

My inspiration for the kyotosphere came from of all places a 500-year-old bathroom in Kyoto, Japan. To describe the beauty of Kyoto would take centuries. To experience Kyoto would take a lifetime.

The Zen Temple Rock Garden, The Gold Temple, The former Imperial Palace, the list goes on. The attention to detail is taken to a level of supreme artistry. Even down to the bathrooms.

We were eating in a 500-year-old restaurant when I needed to visit the bathroom. The hallway leading to the restroom was a glow with warm amber light coming from a very small lantern next to the sliding door near the bathroom. Rice paper was all that concealed my privacy. The lantern outside the door also lit up the restroom through the rice paper. The reflection of the lamp through the rice paper wall is what got my dome bubblin’.

The concept of the kyotosphere is taken from that lantern. In most all of my work, the reflection is as much a part of the design as the piece is.

The kyotosphere is made of steel and finished with a rust patina. Kyotosphere is sold in a set of two. The lamps sit on the stand or you may use the kyotosphere by itself.
The lamp is 28cm tall and combined with the stand it is 115cm.
